G-Technology, Inc. Introduces G-SPEED eS, new G-RAID storage solutions at NAB 2007

By Michael Ames

G-Technology at NAB demonstrated several new additions to its storage family line. At the booth, Roger Mabon, president of the stylish external drive manufacturer gave DMN a quick tour of the new products demonstrated at NAB, specifically the G-Speed eS and the G-RAID(2) 2000, which is designed to support editors working with multiple streams of DV, HDV, and DVCPRO HD clips, as well as uncompressed SD and Apple ProRes 422 video editing workflows. The G-RAID(2) 2000 can be connected to the host computer via FireWire 400, FireWire 800, and USB 2.0. It supports up to 2TB via Hitachi Deskstar hard drives spinning at 7200rpm, and is capable of handling multi-stream DV, HDV, DVCPRO HD, uncompressed SD & Apple ProRes 422 workflows. It ships with a two year warranty and is expected to ship in May 2007.

The G-Speed eS is based on eSATA technology and is targeted at content creators working with multiple SD video streams as well as uncompressed HD editing workflows and can benefit from RAID-5 data protection. The G-Speed eS ($999) features include 7200 RPM Hitachi SATA II drives, 3Gb/s eSATA interface, the capability to support RAID 0, 1, 5 or JBOD configurations, support for up to 4TB of storage, web based graphical user interface for easy management of the system all in a compact aluminum enclosure. Mabon also told DMN that two G-Speed eS systems can handle 10-bit, 1080i playback while in RAID 5 protected mode. A single system supports multiple streams of SD as well as 8-bit 1080/60i HD workflows. The system also ships with a 4-lane PCIe host bus adapter and is supported in Macintosh OS X and Windows XP.
